Life has a habit of turning left when you least expect it. Much will likely be written about how and what artists created during the long quarantine months of 2020. In that regard, "Life Lines" is truly a Covid album. Written by vocalist Elisabeth Lohninger in January, it was imagined as something entirely different, but life did what it does best. It turned left. Produced and recorded remotely, the album manages to boast a deep roster of wildly talented musicians. In addition to repeat guest Pete McCann, one of the most sought-after guitarists on the New York music scene, Elisabeth Lohninger and her pianist/producer husband Walter Fischbacher have invited Sean Nowell on saxophone and John Lake on trumpet. Ulf Stricker, longtime collaborator of the two, joins on drums, with David Jimenez taking over on the Sting tune "Shape Of My Heart". Two guest vocalists add another layer of sophistication and emotion in a couple of duets with the singer: Steven Santoro on her song Alright, and Travon Anderson again on "Shape Of My Heart".
Life Lines marks Elisabeth Lohninger's thirteenth outing as a leader or co-leader. Her 2016 studio album titled "Eleven Promises" (Jazzsick) was hailed as "her best album yet" by Jazz Thing (Germany). Her album "LIVE", recorded while touring in Europe, was named one of the best albums of 2013 by C. Michael Bailey for All About Jazz. And on her album "Songs of Love and Destruction" (2010 Lofish Music), she charms listeners with her intimate delivery and insight into a song's lyrics, joined by an all-star cast of jazz talents that included pianist Bruce Barth, bassist Evan Gregor, and drummer Jordan Perlson, along with special guests trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, tenor saxophonist Donny McCaslin, and violinist Christian Howes.
Growing up in a small Austrian mountain village (population 25), Lohninger started singing in school and church choirs. At the age of six, she joined her two sisters in what would become a nationally renowned vocal group specializing in the songs of her homeland. She soon ventured in other directions and studied classical music and jazz, finishing her studies with a Masters degree in music and English Language and Literature. In 1994, Lohninger relocated to New York.
Elisabeth has toured as a band leader with her quartet as well as in duo and trio settings. Her touring schedule has included renowned venues such as Porgy & Bess in Vienna, Jazzschmiede Duesseldorf, The Blue Note, The Jazz Standard and Kitano in New York City, B-Flat Jazz Club in Tokyo. Highlights of her festival performances are: Summerstage New York, Mexico City (Eurojazz Festival), International Prague Jazz Festival, Cairo International Jazz Festival, International Jazz Festival Hilden (Germany). Since 2002 Lohninger is a faculty member at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music.
Fans and press agree: Elisabeth Lohninger is a "Vocal acrobat". She has the ability to "enchant her audience with her incredible vocal range and multi-facetted voice, and to pull listeners into her stories and songs."
Her music, though rooted in jazz, defies genre definition. Style serves song. Her songs run deep. And in Elisabeth's book, that's all that really matters.

Alegria (E. Lohninger)
Rooted in afro-cuban rhythm with its odd meter interlude and shifting bass figure, Alegria is at its heart a song about remembering first love. Its distinctive 3 sections represent 3 parts of a love story: a whimsical happiness in the intro/interlude is paired with the memory of a first meeting, this one composed in minor, which merges into a Major section that is an affirmation, saying yes to a relationship in a joyful, confident way. The song has both English and Spanish lyrics.
Cool Cat (E. Lohninger)
This song was originally conceived as a New Orleans Style Blues with a bass line. Drummer Ulf Stricker added the 4 over 3 feel to it which gave the song a more modern jazz vibe. The lyrics are purposely weird and absurd, as if the singer was hallucinating. Sean Nowell solos on this track.
Heart Song (E. Lohninger)
This song features a meter switch between 4 and 6 but structurally stays within a traditional song structure of verse/chorus/bridge. The lyrics are a call-to-action of sorts to give yourself permission to fall apart in order to heal. The soaring synth guitar solo by Walter Fischbacher is cushioned in 25 layers of vocal choir and ends a capella.
Shadows Fall/Luz Adentro (E. Lohninger)
The smooth samba feel here belies the lyric of the song - a question to the beloved: "Will you be my love when the shadows fall", and "What remains, when dreams become the weed that cracks the wall?". But the song takes a lighter turn in the Coda when it switches into 6/4 meter and Elisabeth chants "La Luz Adentro" - the light within, and "Sobre todo Juntos"-above all together.
Love Vertigo (E. Lohninger, W. Fischbacher)
Co-written by Elisabeth Lohninger and Walter Fischbacher, the song is built on the muscular piano riff, the melody in the verse a cascading line of fifths. Brimming with exuberance it commits the singer to a step off the cliff and into the craziness of a love affair. The 7/4 meter adds an unsettled quality to the song. Pete McCann solos.
Todavia Tu (E. Lohninger)
Its foundation a relaxed backbeat groove, this song has a distinctive island vibe. A dramatic modulation up a tritone adds emotional depth and musical complexity. Written and sung in Spanish, the song tells of the small things in the lives of two people who are still in love with each other after many years. Todavia Tu-Still You.
Be Real (Soul2Soul) (E. Lohninger)
Flowing with a distinctive R&B vibe, the song is swathed in lavish backup choirs and a bridge that asks the listener, "are you ready to love who you are?"
Shape Of My Heart (Gordon M. T. Sumner)
A reharm by Walter Fischbacher, this Sting tune features Detroit vocalist Travon Anderson.
Come Together (Lennon/McCartney)
Hewing close to the original, the song is also a tip of the hat to Herbie Hancock with his ability to blend contemporary pop music with jazz. Featuring Pete McCann on guitar and Walter Fischbacher on piano.
Alright (E. Lohninger)
"This will forever be the song that I dreamed", Elisabeth Lohninger says about the closing track of the album. A pop ballad that features guest vocalist Steven Santoro, it is a song about reaching out to each other in our moment of need.

Das Leben hat die Angewohnheit, scharf nach links abzudrehen, wenn man es am wenigsten erwartet. Vieles wird darüber geschrieben werden, wie und vor allem was Künstler während der langen Quarantänemonate von 2020 kreiert haben. In dieser Hinsicht ist "Life Lines" ein wahrhaftiges Covid Album. Sängerin Elisabeth Lohninger schrieb es im Januar, mit einer völlig anderen Idee im Kopf. Aber dann machte das Leben das, was es am besten macht. Es drehte scharf nach links ab. Komplett in Isolation produziert, weist das Ablum dennoch eine Who-is-who Liste herausragender Musiker auf. Zusätzlich zu Pete McCann, einem der gesuchtesten Gitarristen der New York Musikszene, haben Elisabeth Lohninger und ihr Pianist/Produzent und Ehemann Walter Fischbacher Sean Nowell am Saxophon und John Lake an der Trompete eingeladen. Ulf Stricker, Langzeitkollaboreur der beiden, ist am Schlagzeug zu hören, während David Jimenez fuer den Sting Song "Shape Of My Heart" die Schlagstöcke übernimmt. Zwei Gastsänger verfeinern Klang und Emotion in Duetten mit der Sängerin: Steven Santoro auf ihrem Song "Alright" und Travon Anderson wiederum auf "Shape Of My Heart".

Aufgewachsen in einem 5-Häuser-Dorf in Österreich, hatte Lohninger ihre Anfänge in Schul- und Kirchenchören. Im Alter von 6 Jahren begann sie mit ihren zwei Schwestern konzertant österreichische Volksmusik zu singen - eine Formation, die bundesweit bekannt wurde. Aber ihre musikalische Neugierde zog sie in andere Richtungen, zu klassischer Musik und Jazz. Nach Abschluss ihres Musik und Englisch Studiums in Salzburg übersiedelte sie 1994 nach New York.
Elisabeth tourt als Bandleaderin mit ihrem Quartett, als auch in Duo und Trio Besetzungen. Alegria (E. Lohninger)
Verwurzelt in afro-kubanischen Rhythmen mit seinen ungeraden Metren im Interlude und einer verlagerten Bassfigur, ist Alegria in Essenz ein Song über die Erinnerung an den Beginn einer großen Liebe. Drei Abschnitte repräsentieren drei Teile einer Liebesgeschichte: das wundersame Glück in der Einleitung ist gepaart mit der Erinnerung an ein erstes Treffen, in Moll gehalten, das übergeht in einen Dur Teil, eine Affirmation, ein freudiges und selbstbewußtes Ja Sagen zu dem, was ist. Alegria ist in Englisch und Spanisch gesungen.
Cool Cat (E. Lohninger)
Dieses Lied war usrprünglich als New Orleans Blues mit prägnanter Basslinie konzipiert. Schlagzeuger Ulf Stricker brachte das 4 über 3 Feel ein, was dem Lied einen Modern Jazz Touch verleiht. Der Text ist absurd und bizarr, fast wie eine Halluzination. Sean Nowell soliert.
Heart Song (E. Lohninger)
Hier pendelt der Takt zwischen 4 und 6 hin und her, wobei der Song in der traditionellen Songform von Vers/Chorus/Bridge verankert ist. Der Text ist eine Art Aufruf, eine Herzensheilung zuzulassen. Das mitreißende Synth Gitarre Solo von Walter Fischbacher ist eingebettet in vielstimmigen Chor und endet a capella.
Shadows Fall/Luz Adentro (E. Lohninger)
Das samtige Samba Feel täuscht: der Text stellt eine Frage an den Lebenspartner: "Will you be my love when the shadows fall", und "What remains, when dreams become the weed that cracks the wall?" In der Coda wendet sich die Stimmung des Songs, der Takt wechselt zu 6/4, und Elisabeth singt "La Luz Adentro" - das Licht im Innern, und "Sobre todo Juntos" - über allem gemeinsam.

Mit einem entspannten Backbeat Groove als Basis verleiht dieser Song ein wenig Inselgefühl. Eine dramatische Tritonus Modulation sorgt für emotionalen Tiefgang und musikalische Komplexität. In Spanisch geschrieben und gesungen, erzählt das Lied von kleinen, alltäglchen Dingen im Leben zweier Menschen, die sich nach vielen Jahren zusammen immer noch lieben. Todavia Tu - Immer noch Du.
